You in the Age of AI

Hey friend, Katie here.

If you’ve chosen to read this, its subject might have you feeling intrigued, or wary, or both.

Don’t worry.

Craft Polish is still about language, and I actually have great news about the elephant in the room.

I’m talking about Artificial Intelligence.

I mean the Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and Bard, that people can now use to produce scripts of all kinds, on every subject.

These language models are forms of generative AI, so they can be prompted to generate texts people can use as their own.

They are powerful tools with implications for how people use language to communicate.

Is this good or bad?

It may surprise you to hear me say it’s good.

LLMs are language tools, like books or Google.

The difference is they’re using algorithms and massive data sets to generate new content instantaneously.

They are, in fact, incredibly useful.

Why does this matter to you?

Even if you’re not using LLMs, it’s important to know many people are, and this use will grow exponentially in the coming years.

While people using text they didn’t write isn’t new, it will be a broader, more pervasive phenomenon.

This widespread use will make people’s self-expression less their own, and less unique.

How on earth is this great news?

Because who you are is now your greatest asset.

Your humanity is your advantage.

Where many will be using generic text, you can stand out with your own, personal use of language.

Here are 4 crucial aspects of your human edge in the Age of AI:

  1. Your emotional intelligence

  2. Your critical thinking

  3. Your creativity

  4. Your voice

I’ll be unpacking each one of these subjects in my upcoming emails.

The takeaway from today?

You are an actual self in the world, and that is great news.

Stay tuned.

All warm best,

Katie

PS. If you’re along for the ride, I’d love to know more about you. Email or DM me and tell me a bit about yourself. I’ll get back to you.
